Paw balm for dogs: protecting those tiny beans

Paw pads are tough, but hot pavement, winter ice-melt, sand and dry indoor air can leave them cracked and sore. A paw balm is a small habit that keeps them soft and protected.

Two kinds of balm

Dogs lick their paws, so choose products made for dogs, and check with your vet about deep cracks, bleeding, limping or swelling.

How to use paw balm

  1. Wipe and dry the paws.
  2. Rub a pea-sized amount into each pad.
  3. Distract with a treat or chew for a couple of minutes while it absorbs.
  4. The 7-second rule: if pavement is too hot for the back of your hand for 7 seconds, it's too hot for paws.

How we put this together: we read manufacturer product pages, ingredient labels and veterinary-organization guidance. We have not lab-tested these products and we don't give star ratings. Formulas change, so always read the current label. Last reviewed 2026-10-21.
